Important question for working professionals who, despite their efforts to attend to everyone in their lives, still haven’t prioritized their personal health:
If there was a way to drastically improve your overall health, energy and wellbeing without feeling hangry all day, eating like a rabbit or spending long hours in the kitchen meal prepping, would you finally feel confident committing to putting yourself first?
Here’s why putting everyone ahead of yourself is costing you – big time.
Every day, you’re exposed to a litany of demands on your energy, your emotions and your time. You prioritize the needs of friends, family, dependents and your spouse – often pouring from an empty cup. The question is, who is filling yours?
Whether you are aware of the gaps in your personal health or not, your ability to show up as your best, most energetic and uncompromisingly get-things-done self rests heavily on your answer to this question.
If you know without a doubt that you’re not taking enough care of your personal health, or if your knowledge of where to start on a journey to wellness escapes you and the pressure to be ‘beautiful’ has you criticizing yourself…
… or if you know that you could be modelling a better sense of confidence and self-care to your children… then keep reading!
…Because what follows could be the pivotal moment you look back at from the point of view of your best self months from now. From the point of view of the ‘you’ that feels proud to be in your body, strong and infused with a fresh energy and enthusiasm for all of life’s opportunities. But first… how are you?
Aren’t we always being asked this question? Whether you’re being asked by an ambivalent colleague who doesn’t care to hear the answer or someone who cares genuinely it doesn’t really matter, because you likely haven’t taken the time to really think it over anyway.
I get it.
I was there - a young professional who should have had the world in my hands, yet what I felt was chronic depletion, overwhelm and a sense of distancing from a body that I used to know. This ‘new’ body presented me in a light I didn’t often want to acknowledge. The truth was – I didn’t feel good.
I was supposed to be in my prime, but the symptoms of anxiety that rose just out of tending to the basics of my life and its inherent responsibilities were draining me. I was giving so much of myself during the day that I had very limited reserves available at the end of each day for nurturing my closest relationships, feeling joy and having fun.
I felt such a sense of internal chaos on the treadmill of life, in fact, that I found myself resentful when others asked me for help. With so much on my plate, literally and figuratively, I was not able to enjoy my life!
Meanwhile, I was watching my family members deal with chronic health issues, and I could see my forthcoming fate. Despite the evidence before me, I just didn’t know how to make a change. I didn’t remember what it felt like to be full of energy and feeling physically capable and present. I tried every kind of diet I could get my hands on, but ultimately these efforts ended in more binge eating to soothe chronic feelings of lack.
I was working hard in every area of my life, pleasing bosses and colleagues and working to ensure that my family had their needs met. Food had become a means to repress how I felt about the fact that I had no time for who I was, or what I needed.
The truth was, I couldn’t have answered the question ‘how are you?’, simple as it seemed, with any degree of authenticity. Not if I didn’t want to end up a sobbing puddle on the boardroom floor, my inconvenient emotions splayed-out for all to see. Always doing more with less energy required that I set aside my feelings about who I was becoming in order to keep the wheels of my complex life turning.
There came a time, though, where avoiding the truth of the state of my health and lifestyle was no longer possible if I ever wanted to get well. I began answering ‘how am I?’ for myself, to myself, and the answers left me no alternative but to take control if I didn’t want to spend the next thirty years living a limited life and feeling limited emotions.
So, I ask you:
With all that we do for the people outside of ourselves, wouldn’t it feel great to feel some support ourselves?
With the amount of time and effort we spend on other people, wouldn’t it feel good to have your own needs put in the driver’s seat? Wouldn’t our relationships benefit from seeing the best version of ourselves? The ‘us’ who is gives from an overflowing cup of emotional and physical energy abundance, and who can therefore do more, be more and show up more for the important people in our lives without the dreaded feeling of resentment that so often accompanies us in our chronic depletion?
You deserve to wake up every morning feeling rested and excited for the opportunities of the day. To know how to nurture yourself and your unique physiology in a way that optimizes your health. You deserve to be released from the shame of overeating, binge eating and eating without a mind for the consequences to your health. You deserve to feel empowered by your body and your wellbeing.
You don’t want, or even need, to be the 20-year-old version of yourself – you’re beyond superficial aspirations. What you deserve now, what is your birthright, is to feel so good in your body that the word ‘burden’ is removed from your vocabulary – because you see only opportunities. You want to be as involved in the day as you choose to be. You just want to enjoy your life without the constant strain and drain of feeling chronically uncharged and unwell. When asked who fills your cup – you deserve to answer confidently: ME!
Executive profiles – A company is only as strong as its executive leadership. This is a good place to show off who’s occupying the corner offices. Write a nice bio about each executive that includes what they do, how long they’ve been at it, and what got them to where they are.
It happens to the best of us.
You got lost taking-on all of life at once, and in that mission, you failed to account for the demands that would be placed on your wellbeing.
You meant to address your lifestyle concerns, but your ‘later’ became ‘never’ and the years are flying by.
You’ve probably tried a variety of methods to help get you feeling on top of things again, but without accountability and individual support other priorities overtook your health goals. Remember that time you and your girlfriend were going to meal-prep?
Like all of us, you’ve got some areas in your life where you just. Feel. Stuck.
No matter how many times you try, you end up giving up and adding to the list of defeats…feeling more frustrated each time – and reinforcing limiting beliefs each time you do. How many times have you stood in your kitchen at the end of a long day and thought: eating right is hard! Eating right takes too much time! Everything is bad for you! I don’t have the time or the money to get the help I need! Why does eating ‘right’ taste so… wrong?

Easy for me to say…
… or is it?
Who am I to be saying this stuff, anyway?
Let me introduce myself. I’m Jessica Derksen. The first True to You coaching recipient – ever.
Yes, in fact, I was the first person to benefit from the new awareness and understandings that eventually came together to form this unique True to You health coaching method.
When I’m not hanging out with my family, or running races with my step-sons, I’m continuously working to help women all over North America do what I did when I decided to make strategic, long-term and profound changes to my lifestyle. The changes I made positively impacted not just my physical health, but my emotional health and self-image. I made changes that worked for ME in a way that is sustainable and, more than anything, represents who I am and what kind of lifestyle I want to live – one that’s fun, authentic, expansive, and allows me to enjoy all the abundance of choice that life has to offer.
I’ve combined personal insight with insight gleaned from my diverse experiences coaching women to discover practical ways to honour themselves and their bodies, take the anxiety out of the food conversation and find their personal power once again!
“Before working with Jessica, I had been on and off diets for years. I was tired of not being able to consistently manage my weight despite obsessing about what I was eating and how much I weighed.
I knew I needed help following through with my health goals because what I was doing was not working. The event that really led to me signing up with True to You was when I tried to put clothes on that I had worn the previous summer and found that despite my efforts, the majority of them did not fit.
Since following Jessica’s guidance and the True to You method, I have dropped three pant sizes and I fit my favourite clothes again! I have lost weight, but I no longer feel compelled to weigh myself at all. Working with Jessica required me to get real and answer some hard questions that really took me for a deep dive into my thought processes, personal life and the internal barriers to success that had been holding me back for so long.
Not only was I able to change what I was eating, but I also changed how I was eating – something I had not considered prior to contacting Jessica. Learning to slowly change my habits into ones that align with my overall goals has made the biggest difference not only in my health, but within my life as a whole!”
